Paradox of Choice

Paradox of choice. Having too many choices in life, causes uncertainty in the things we have chosen. This day and age we are surrounded by so many options in study, jobs, partners, housing, that the things we do choose are always compared, or we condemn ourselves to questioning whether we made the right choice.

Stricken with options, many choose not to commit to any one thing as to commit means to reject or deny all other possible alternatives, it is to give up the many for a few. Breadth without depth is a moto which demonstrates leaving many options open so that we can experience a little bit of each, but without ever feeling the depth which comes with commitment to any one person, course, place or thing.

Commitment is the alternative. It is committing yourself to something or someone without consistently reflecting it back to what you are missing out on. When this frame of mind is formed, only that which is truly important to you forms at the forefront of your life.

Moral of the Story. Exploration is good, necessary, but once something valuable is found, don’t reject it out of losing all other options, and don’t continuously reflect back to would have, could have, as this prevents the fulfilment which can be found in the current situation. To experience truly meaningful depth in certain aspects of your life means letting go of that which is no longer important to you. Some things you can only have the honour of feeling and experiencing after a vast period of time spent on it.
